Wolverines Survive Seawolves Scare for 15th Win

The adage, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” was never more evident today as the Wolverines staved off a ferocious six-run sixth inning rally by the nationally ranked Southern Maine Community College Seawolves to win their fifteenth game of the season, 13-11. The day didn’t start well for the home club as SMCC took a quick 2-0 in the top of the first. However, the Wolverines bats responded with four runs in the first, four in the second, two in the third, and three more in the fourth to open what seemed like a confortable 13-2 lead. Down but not out, the Seawolves scored three runs in the fifth off of a tiring Sean Mullaney (Newton, MA) who held the Seawolves scoreless in the second, third and fourth frames. Coach Brad Smith then called Zach Walker (Hingham, MA) out of the bullpen to close the sixth and final inning. Several key hits and some defensive lapses made the game interesting as the Seawolves rallied with six to make the score 13-11 and had the tying run at the plate when the final out was made. The victory gives the Wolverines a chance to tie the school record for most wins in a season as they host the Lumberjacks of Hebron Academy in a MAISAD conference game Tuesday at 4:00.
