Baseball Has a Busy Weekend

The Wolverine baseball team had a weekend of mixed results. BA started out strong as they beat The University of New England 8-0. Ben Callahan (Exeter, NH) led the shutout game with seven great innings of pitching. In his time on the mound he totaled nine strikeouts. While Callahan did his part in keeping UNE off the scoreboard, BA stayed strong at the plate. Bo Belt (Concord, MA), Jason Hudson (Raleigh, NC), Harry Knowles (Seabrook, NH), and Austin Wood (Naples, ME) each had two hits in the game.

As the team traveled to Lynn, MA on Sunday, they were not as successful as they had hoped for. In the first game of the Showcase BA fell to Boston University 5-4. In the very close game Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, MA) threw four strong innings. Joey McCarthy (West Roxbury, MA) had two hits while Terry Casey (Halifax, NS) went one for three and Wood had a double. The team then faced off against Harvard University where McCarthy and Knowles in a combined effort kept the Crimson to only three runs. However, Harvard's ace was able to quiet BA’s bats and hold the team to one run. Sean Mullen (Barnstable, MA) went one for one with two walks and McCarthy added a double for the Wolverines.

Baseball Falls to CMCC

The baseball team traveled to Central Maine Community College where they had a tough loss with a score of 11-3.

While the team may have lost, there were some solid individual statistics. Ben Callahan ( Exeter, NH) went two for three with a homerun. Jason Hudson (Raleigh, NC) went one for three and recorded a second homerun for the game. Bo Belt (Concord, MA) had two stolen bases and a run scored for the Wolverines.

Coach Izaryk plans to use the game to the Wolverines advantage and learn from it. "We didn't play well enough to win today. In order to beat quality teams, we need to take care of the baseball, and put pressure on the defense by keeping the ball in play offensively. Our pitching staff did a nice job throwing strikes, however, our location lacked. We're looking forward to addressing these issues in practice, and look forward to our Merrimack weekend," said Izaryk.

With a unfortunate loss behind them the team is looking forward to their next game as they travel to Merrimack College on Saturday September 18th to play at Noon. They will then face Merrimack at home the following day (the 19th) at Noon as well.

Baseball Splits with UNH

The wolverine baseball team hosted UNH this weekend. After losing the first game 11-3 the team fought back to win the second 5-1.

"We faced some adversity after losing the first game, and rebounded well to win the back half of the doubleheader. I was pleased the see the guys respond with a solid game and some energy in the second game. We have some things to work on this week, and we need to learn from the UNH weekend to make ourselves better as a team. There were a few individuals with strong performances, including Bo Belt, however, we need to understand the importance of team success if we're going to become the team we think we can be," said Coach Izaryk.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Sean Mullen (Marston Mills, MA) pitched better than the score suggested, having been the victim of some tough breaks behind him. Bo Belt (Concord, MA) reached base four times, going two for three with a walk and reaching on an error. Tanner Chase (York, ME) also reached base cleanly on all four of his at bats with three walks and a single. Harry Knowles (Seabrook, NH) also had two hits.

In the second game, Bridgton bounced back behind the pitching of Ben Callahan (Exeter, NH) and Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, MA) who combined for seven innings giving up only one run. Joey McCarthy (Stoughton, MA)was two for three with two runs scored and Knowles added the big hit of the game, a two out two RBI single in the fifth inning. Austin Wood (Naples, ME) was also three for three with a double and run scored.

The baseball team will be working hard in practice to prepare for their next match up where they will travel to Central Maine Community College on Wednesday September 15th to play at 4:00 P.M.

Baseball Starts the Season With a Win

The baseball team had an exciting home opener with their first win in the books. The Wolverines beat Southern Maine Community College 4-1.

Joey McCarthy (Stoughton, MA) went 1-3 with a go-ahead triple, 2 RBI’s, and a run scored. Garrett Alibozek (Adams, MA) added two hits as well as two RBI’s. Harry Knowles (Seabrook, NH) kept the rally alive in the 5th inning with a big hit and a stolen base.

Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, MA), Patrick Moody (Fair Haven, NJ), and Benjamin Callahan (Exeter, NH) combined pitched seven innings of one run baseball.

Coach Izaryk was very happy with how the team came together to secure their first win. "We played well this afternoon, against a quality opponent. I encouraged the guys to play hard and stay within themselves in the home opener. Too many times, players get so excited about finally having the opportunity to play and compete, they ignore the fundamentals they've worked so hard on during pre-season. I was very proud of the way our guys played the game today; taking care of the baseball, making routine plays and putting pressure on the defense,” said Izaryk.

The baseball team is looking forward to their next match up as they play at home again on Saturday September 11th against the University of New Hampshire at noon.
